PROJECTS: Earthquake Site

Earthquake Site

Disaster 1906

I have finally put my old earthquake site back online.

Technically I am still finishing up a Master's Degree in Instructional Technology at San Francisco State University. (even though I'm taking a short break from it to get a law degree). In the Fall semester of 2000 I built a little educational web site about the 1906 Earthquake & Fire in San Francisco that I called "Disaster 1906".

The site includes some information about earthquakes in general, some great photos, a few quicktime movies (be patient, the files are quite large and may take a while to load), and and some links to the best books on the subject that I could find at the time.

The earthquake site was a fun little project to do. However, the site is very limited by the tools, skills, and experience I had available at the time. This was basically my first web site. One of these days I hope to finish the write up about the experience and finish my Master's in Instructional Technology.

I understand some recent research has concluded that much of our history of the 1906 earthquake may have been deceptly written to accomidate the City's need to have insurance companies pay for much of the rebuilding costs. If you have information about such research please contact me. I would love to hear more about it.

San Francisco 1906 Earthquake and Fire Books:

For those of you interested in some really great old fashioned reading material,
here are links to two of my favorite books about the 1906 earthquake.

The Earth Shook, the Sky Burned
by William Bronson

There are dozens of books about the great San Francisco earthquake and fire of 1906. I have read most of them and this is by far my favorite. This stirring account of the tragedy is illustrated with most of the best photos available from the time. Many from the Arnold Genth collection, many taken in the places of most danger. Bill's book is a wonderful, must-have book for those who are interested in the history of the 1906 earthquake.

If You Lived At The Time Of The Great San Francisco Earthquake
by Ellen Levine, Pat Grant Porter & Richard Williams

This book takes you to San Francisco, California, shortly before, during, and after April 18, 1906. Lighter and more entertaining for kids than Bill Bronson's book it is a wonderful introduction to life at the turn of the last century.
